Sugar Hollow Park's Great Outdoors Learning Dome (GOLD) is currently open as a base camp for local educators to use for exploring the "wild side" of the park. Building upon a fruitful partnership, the HRSWCD, City of Bristol VA and Alpha Natural Resources took the lead roles in developing the first stages of GOLD. Emory & Henry Bonner Scholars have been the essential element to the development of GOLD. Beyond designing GOLD, the HRSWCD donated educational resources and staff time. The City of Bristol, VA is providing the facility which is conveniently located within walking distance of a retreat center, campground, wetland, and multiple trails that traverse the park.
Outdoor education opportunities abound in Sugar Hollow Park! Enhancing the community’s connection and interest in the park land, water and facilities will be a major focus. The Learning Dome will provide educators with a “base camp” within the park to allow a wide-variety of meaningful outdoor educational programs to be offered on a regular basis. Educational programs can be adjusted to meet the needs and interests of coinciding park events. The potential for GOLD to be a successful addition to Sugar Hollow Park is huge and exciting! Look for traditional and unique adult education workshops to be offered soon!
